VanPASS September 2019 - Power BI Report Server: a Deep Dive

Language: English
Event Type: In-Person
Online Meeting URL: None
RSVP URL: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/vanpass-september-2019-tickets-70158416713

We are pleased to have Luca Gualtieri, an MCP in Analyzing and Visualizing Data with Power BI and a BI Consultant with over a decade of experience, join us as he presents "Power BI Report Server: a Deep Dive".

Session Outline:

The session is for everyone who thinks they know everything they need about the Power BI Report Server (PBIRS) but wants to go the extra mile and is interested in most advanced topics.

Session Format:

In this session I am going to open a Live Power BI Dashboard which collects and shows survey responses (in real time) about the attendees’ level of expertise on PBIRS and their favorite topics. The dashboard works on top of a streaming dataset; I will ask the attendees to answer questions on a Survey developed with Microsoft Forms; when they submit the form, their answers will be shown on my Live Power BI dashboard. This is the magic of using Microsoft Flow, as an automation tool, between Forms and Power BI.

This is a smart way to kick off the session because I will be able to understand the overall level of expertise of my attendees and, at the same time, I can slightly customize the flow of the presentation based on the topics they would like to hear the most about.

In this session I’m going to discuss basic topics like “different editions / licensing for PBIRS” and “branding for PBIRS”, and more advanced topics such as “Configuring Advanced Options through SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio)”, how to “Embed PBIRS reports”, how to “monitor the Report Server catalog” and use the “REST-API”. I’ll spend a bit of time talking about “PBIRS security” and “custom roles in PBIRS”. I’ll describe quickly how “Configure Kerberos” to resolve connectivity issues and I’ll discuss how to sue different “Authentication Types”, when and why you need them.

In addition to these topics, we will discuss other advanced concepts such as “high availability” and “disaster recovery”. We will then jump into configuring your report server to “host Excel workbooks using Office Online Server”.  Eventually, if some of these topics will be selected as some of the favorites, we will demonstrate how to “configure an SSAS Power Pivot instance for the Excel data model”.

PlentyOfFish Media ULC has generously sponsored both the pizza and location for this event, so feel free to contact us or click on the link to view current opportunities at this fast-paced organization with one of the largest deployments of SQL Server in North America.  Please grab a ticket to let us know you are coming and visit us at vancouver.pass.org for more info.
